Allium "Purple Sensation" is a spectacular variety of decorative onion, which is distinguished by its large, deep purple inflorescences. This plant adds expressive color accents to the spring garden, decorating flower beds and mixed borders. Due to its unpretentiousness and ability to harmoniously combine with many other plants, "Purple Sensation" is often used in landscape design. It is also suitable for cutting, preserving its decorativeness in bouquets.
Variety description
- Inflorescences: The variety "Purple Sensation" forms large spherical inflorescences with a diameter of 10-12 cm. They consist of numerous small star-shaped flowers of intense purple color, which are densely arranged, creating spectacular flower balls.
- Height: Stems reach a height of 80-100 cm, making 'Purple Sensation' a prominent accent in the garden. This height allows the plant to look good in mixed borders and in the background of flower beds.
- Leaves: Broad, lanceolate, deep green leaves are located at the base of the stem. As with most alliums, the leaves begin to wilt before flowering, which is a natural process.
- Flowering time: Allium "Purple Sensation" blooms in late spring to early summer, usually in May-June. Blooms last for several weeks, adding brightness and structure to the garden landscape.
- Aroma: The flowers have a light, barely noticeable aroma.
- Durability: This variety is frost-resistant and tolerates winter conditions well. Bulbs are resistant to most pests and diseases, able to remain in the soil for several years without transplanting.
Cultivation features
- Soil: Grows best in well-drained, fertile soil. Prefers sunny areas, but can also grow in light partial shade. It is important to avoid overwetting the soil to prevent the bulbs from rotting.
- Planting: Bulbs are planted in autumn at a depth of 15-20 cm with a distance of about 20 cm between plants to provide them with enough space for development and abundant flowering.
- Care: After flowering, the inflorescences can be left for a decorative effect, as dry flower balls look quite spectacular. It is recommended to cut the leaves only after they are completely withered, so that the plant can accumulate nutrients for the next season.
Where to plant?
- Flower beds and flower beds: Allium "Purple Sensation" is ideal for creating accents in flower beds. Group planting provides the maximum decorative effect.
- Mixed borders: Due to its height and bright color, this variety fits well in mixed borders, creating a nice contrast with other perennials such as peonies, irises or lavender.
- Alpine slides: With its purple color and structural shape, the inflorescence adds dynamism and volume to alpine slides.
- Cutting: Purple Sensation flowers are great for cutting. They stay fresh in a vase for a long time, and dried inflorescences can be used to create winter bouquets and decorative compositions.
Allium 'Purple Sensation' is an excellent choice for gardeners looking to add vibrant color and elegant form to their garden design. Its rich purple flowers will become a real decoration of any flower arrangement and will bring a special charm to the garden.
