White sweet clover (Melilotus albus) — an annual multipurpose forage crop, a powerful honey plant, and an effective green manure for improving soil fertility.
Features and benefits of white sweet clover:
-
Valuable honey plant
White sweet clover is one of the most productive nectar plants. Its long and abundant flowering strongly attracts bees, increasing overall honey productivity of the area. -
Soil improvement and green manure
The plant produces a large amount of organic matter (up to 100–120 t/ha), enriching the soil with calcium, sulfur, phosphorus, and potassium, significantly improving soil fertility. -
Strong root system
Deep roots (up to 2 m) loosen the soil, improve its structure, and provide a reclamation effect, supporting natural land restoration. -
Hardiness and low requirements
White sweet clover grows well even on poor soils, is light-demanding, and drought-resistant, but does not tolerate acidic soils.
Seed preparation before sowing:
Seeds have a hard coat, so scarification is recommended — mechanical disruption of the seed coat to improve germination. At home, this can be done using sandpaper or in a concrete mixer with an abrasive surface.
After scarification, germination rate can reach up to 90%.
Seeding rates:
- Row sowing: 10–12 kg/ha
- Wide-row sowing: 6–8 kg/ha
